Today anyone, with one tool and five minutes, can produce a model in a dress under flattering light. What is hard, and what decides whether that image can sell, is something else: that the garment in the image is the real garment, and that it stays the real garment across the next thirty shots in the catalogue. That is where most AI-generated images fall apart.

What AI replaces and what it doesn't

Generative AI has not eliminated fashion photography. It has eliminated one specific part of its logistics: the set, the lighting, the location, the model's schedule, producing physical samples just to photograph them. For certain pieces that saving is real and it is large.

What it does not replace is judgement about the product. A camera photographs what is in front of it; an AI model photographs nothing, it builds a plausible image from a description. And 'plausible' and 'faithful' are not the same thing. That distinction, which seems minor, separates an image you can publish from one you cannot.

Where the failure shows?

The problem is rarely aesthetic quality: today's tools generate technically flawless images. The problem is fidelity. The image is beautiful, but the garment it shows does not exist, or it is not the one the brand sells. It shows up starkly in three types of garment, the ones that depend on a physical detail AI does not understand, only imitates.

Embroidery. Real embroidery has a logic: a stitch direction, a thread density, a specific relief, a motif that repeats in an exact way. AI reproduces the general look of 'something embroidered', but it invents the stitch, flattens the relief and breaks the repeat of the motif. For a brand with its own embroidery, a piece patterned over weeks, the generated version is not its garment: it is another one that resembles it from a distance. Embroidery. Chiffon, gauze, organza, tulle. Their behaviour depends on how light passes through them, on how layers overlap and shift opacity where they meet, on how they fall under their own weight. AI resolves them too much or too little: it makes them too solid, invents folds that fabric would never make, or misses the exact point of transparency. The result shows, and you can tell something is off, even if the person looking cannot name what.

La ropa interior con transparencias. Here transparency is controlled and it is the product itself: how much shows through, where the lace is opaque and where it is not, how a tulle panel interacts with a lined one. AI does not reproduce that specific transparency from a generic description: it exaggerates it, erases it or invents a lace structure that is not the brand's. And in a category where the detail of the lace and the degree of transparency are literally what is being bought, an approximation will not do.

The pattern is always the same: a generic tool, with a generic description, produces something believable, not something faithful. And a catalogue image has a single job, to show the product the customer will receive. A beautiful image of a garment that does not exist is not an asset, it is a problem.

Difficult does not mean unsolvable. The answer is not in finding the perfect tool, it is in judgement, and judgement can be learned: it is part of what we work on in our Academy workshops. In the second part, we look at what a professional checks so that a generated image really is the garment that sells. workshops de Academy. En la segunda parte (Fotos de producto con IA: qué separa una profesional de una genérica (Parte II) vemos qué mira un profesional para que una imagen generada sea, de verdad, la prenda que vende.

This article reflects the state of AI tools as of August 2026.
