Anyone who promises it does is selling an incomplete solution under another name. This is not a brand opinion: it is where the sector consensus has landed. Each tool solves one phase well and the rest worse, and building a stack with judgement, not a single subscription, is what separates a professional workflow from an improvised one.

This is proven in practice again and again. Image AI still fails with complex fabrics: sheers, embroidery, sheens. The result depends above all on the variables you give the tool (fabric, drape, trims, colour with a reference), not just on which one you pick. And the choice between traditional photography and AI changes case by case, not according to a fixed preference for a technology. This piece joins those three points: this is what a complete stack looks like, phase by phase.

Ideation Here the goal is volume of concepts, not product fidelity yet. Exploratory image-generation and moodboard tools let you test style directions, palette and composition fast and cheap, before committing production time to any of them. It is the phase with the most room to be wrong at no cost, so it is also where it makes least sense to demand garment precision from the tool.

Production This is where the final product image comes in: virtual try-on on a model, generation from a real garment or a sample, with the level of brief judgement we already covered in the article dedicated to that. This is the phase where a well-built brief shows most, and where it is worth deciding, following the criteria from the photography-or-AI article, whether that specific reference calls for traditional photography, AI, or both.

Retouching The generated image rarely comes out ready to publish directly, just as a traditional photo does not without editing. Colour correction, print alignment, detail cleanup and resolution upscaling are still a separate step, with retouching tools that are not the same ones that generated the image. Treating generation as the final step, without this phase, is where an unworked image shows most.

Video Animating the still is the last piece of the workflow, and as we saw in the article dedicated to this, here too there is no single model that wins at everything: the choice depends on whether the shot needs fabric physics, editorial narrative, campaign concept or social volume. The judgement behind that choice is the same one that governs the whole stack: what this specific shot needs, not which tool is the newest.

None of these four phases is solved by the same tool equally well. Anyone who builds their stack thinking of 'one app for everything' ends up forcing the tool outside what it does well, and the result shows, above all in the pieces with the most material complexity. The professional stack is not a tool, it is a sequence of tools chosen phase by phase, with the judgement to know when to switch from one to another.

This article reflects the state of AI tools as of August 2026.
